Reincarnation with Debian

Carrying the fear that future generations will be drown in e-waste, I provide reincarnation service for old computers with Debian.

If you have a computer that was declared dead by the default Operating System (OS) because they consider it to be ‘too old’, chances are they are still functional til the hardware have completely given up. Even when the hardware has truly reached the end of life, your computer might still have hope.

For closed source OS, they want to keep secret for everything they do, so Apple is the producer, and the distributor for MacOS. Similarly, Windows belong to Microsoft, the sole distributor of the one and only OS that needs all kind of software to ‘scan for viruses’.

Contrast with the lonesome of proprietary OS like Windows or Mac, there are many open source distributors. This is a picture showing the distros for GNU/Linux OS since incarnation till 2011:

The graph is not maintained any longer but it shows the vastness of the GNU/Linux world compares to the default OS that were installed with the brand new devices. Most importantly, using and developing open source software and OS is a community activity in the IT sector all over the world - not just by any one single for-profit organisation.

I am very happy with Debian - a distro base entirely on volunteers. Thus I will only install Debian to easily help you use your computer after installation.

A few things to consider when choosing to install GNU/Linux:

1. You still can run the old OS. Meaning you can choose which OS to run when you boot the machine up.
2. Depends on the hardware, installation and tuning process can range from 1 day to 1 week.
3. In the world of libre software: NO WARRANTY.
